Risks of Having a Blood Test
Blood drawing (phlebotomy) is generally a safe procedure. However, the following potential risks may occur:
- Bleeding and Bruising: This can be minimized by applying firm pressure to the insertion site after needle removal.
- Pain: Pain is usually mild and subsides within minutes.
- Infection: This is rare but can occur.
Additional Considerations:
- Inform your healthcare professional if you have a swollen arm or are at risk of edema (swelling) to avoid drawing blood from that arm.
- Alert the phlebotomist if you experience dizziness during the procedure.
Important Note:
High levels of certain substances in your blood may indicate an increased risk for health conditions such as:
- Heart attack
- Cognitive impairment
- Bone fracture
- Systemic inflammation, which can predict degenerative diseases of the heart, eyes, and brain
- Elevated homocysteine levels, which may damage arteries or increase blood clotting
- C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation
